A conversation about two musical bands that sound similar but don’t know each other reminded me of the theory of convergent evolution, and the sad story of the Thylacine, or Tasmanian Wolf.
The Thylacine was a marsupial that independently evolved features similar to mammalian apex hunters like wolves and cougars. It was deliberately hunted to extinction by Tasmanian farmers. The last known member of the species died in the Hobart Zoo in 1936, only 59 days after they gained legal protection.
This is a picture of some young Thylacines.
