This painting illustrates a story from the Finnish epic poem Kalevala, in which Joukahainen promises his beautiful young sister Aino to aging minstrel-god Väinämöinen if he saves him from drowning. Rather than marry the old man Aino drowns herself, only to return as a salmon.
