Chutter Manzil Palace, With the King’s Boat in the Shape of a Fish by Felice Beato, 1858

This is a picture of the King of Oudh’s Umbrella Palace in Lucknow, and a pleasure boat in the shape of a fish. The emblem of the Kings of Oudh was two fishes. The Nawabs of Oudh were of Persian descent, and the symbol was said to have originated with Khosrau II, King of Persia (A.D. 591-628), though I can’t verify this. The fish was also the Buddhist symbol Matsya, which seems more probable.
