Captain Frederick Gustavus Burnaby by James Tissot, 1875 This painting depicts Burnaby in the uniform of the Royal Horse Guards. He was a minor English adventurer in the mold of Charles Gordon, and like Gordon he died fighting Mahdists in the Sudan, at the battle of Abu Klea. Just what the inhabitants of a damp island off the north coast of France were doing in Sudan is still murky today.

There is a certain poignancy seeing Leonard Nimoy - who is Jewish - wear an SS uniform in the Star Trek episode Patterns of Force, 1968. Edit: logisticalnightmares points out that Shatner is also Jewish. I ought to read more before posting!
